Torrevieja Hospital launch annual
2017 flu vaccination campaign

Torrevieja Hospital have just announced the availability of their annual campaign for winter flu vaccinations. The campaign will run over the course of the winter period, from now until 31st January 2018.

In previous years, the hospital has supplied up to 28,000 flu jabs covering residents from Rojales in the north, to Pilar de La Horadada in the southern most area of the Alicante province.

Torrevieja Hospital is hoping to improve on their considerable historic performance, and provide more influenza vaccinations than ever before for this season.

José Tuells, head of Preventive Medicine at Torrevieja Hospital said "It is important that people attend vaccination appointments every year, since the composition of the dose varies according to the strains recommended by the World Health Organisation".

He stated "This means that although you may have been immune to the flu last year, you won´t be protected in the same way during this 2017 winter season, and that´s why it is necessary to get vaccinated again".

In terms of contagion and mortality, the impact of influenza on public health is very high, and annual vaccination is a particularly recommended measure for people aged over 60, and residents suffering with a chronic illness.

People suffering from chronic cardiorespiratory disease or renal dysfunction, pregnant women, and people with a suppressed immune system are at increased risk from contracting the influenza virus over the winter period.

People who work as health professionals or for the emergency services, and persons who might come in to contact with birds or farm livestock (particularly pigs and poultry), are also advised to take part in the innoculation campaign.

Influenza is an extremely contagious respiratory illness, and Torrevieja Hospital have reminded Costa Blanca residents that vaccination can avoid unnecessarily aggravating or complicating pre-existing medical conditions.

Last year 72.6% of the vaccines administered by the hospital were received by patients over the age of 64, reflecting on the criticality that Torrevieja Hospital´s professional Healthcare Prevention team place on their annual flu jab campaign.

Local people living in Torrevieja and surrounding municipalities throughout the Vega Baja can get their annual vaccinations at health centres and clinics, and are advised to arrange an appointment with their local medical centre.
