Summer kitchens in Spain
IF YOU HAVE BEEN to a summer barbecue with friends, family or neighbours, you will know that the event is usually little more than some burgers and sausages languishing on a disposable tin foil barbecue tray.
Of course, some neighbours take things more seriously and fork out the extra money for a something a little more impressive, but here in Spain many people have gone the extra mile to replicate their entire kitchen outside - including the kitchen sink!
Outdoor kitchens, or "summer kitchens" to give them their preferred local title, are structural kitchens built within the perimeter of a private garden, normally adjacent to a dining terrace or other space suited to sociable eating.
A summer kitchen can be as simple as a single structural barbecue, or as elaborate and luxurious as any traditional kitchen, with some summer kitchens better equipped than their indoor counterparts: complete with hob, oven, sink, and a fridge - perfect for keeping the wine cold.
When it comes to exterior social catering, Spain excels quite like nobody else. The long warm Spanish summers are best enjoyed eating al-fresco, and preparing food and cooking outside means the inside of the home remains cooler.
And summer kichens are growing in popularity too. Some of our resale properties come complete with outdoor kitchens, and this new build property in popular Ciudad Quesada has a stunning fully equipped summer kitchen built in to a recessed exterior wall, accessed via a roller door, and replete with modern units, convection oven, microwave oven, and fridge freezer.
Now that is cool!
