Decorate your home with added Spanish style

A holiday home or a second property in Spain is a dream and aspiration for many people living in colder climates. The promise of a more relaxed pace of life, Mediterranean culture, fabulous food, and sunshine on tap often proves a temptation for discerning north Europeans.

Spain is marvellously affordable, but for those that cannot make the move to a property in Spain right now, there are still things you can do to your own property to bring a warm Mediterranean Spanish feeling to your home.

For several centuries Spanish style has been a popular choice of décor, with Spanish decoration added to homes from Madrid to Castellon, from Miami to California, and from Manchester to Castleford.

There are a few characteristics of Spanish style homes that you may be able to replicate with a little interior rebuilding. For example, exposed wooden ceiling beams are very popular in property in Spain. However, if that´s too much you can start with stucco-like wall paint, rag-rolling, and add plenty of dark wood features throughout your home.

A prominent feature of Spanish décor is decorative wrought iron accenting. The most popular places to add wrought iron are as a light fitting, ornate candelabras, handrails, or as an elaborate decorative centrepiece. You can compliment lighting with antique-style wall lights.

In terms of colour, Spanish style homes have a natural, rustic appeal with pure white walls and plenty of earthy tones for flooring, curtains, and detail decoration. Small highlights of primary colours – particularly bright red and yellow (the nations flag colours), are popular decorative additions to any room. Just don´t go over the top!
