Spain, Officially more beautiful Blue Flag beaches

On 28th May the FEE will announce the locations of this year´s Blue Flag certification award winners. Last year Spain was awarded more Blue Flag beaches for 2015 than Italy and Portugal combined, and authorities on the Iberian Peninsula are hopeful for similarly successful results.

Blue Flag certification, issued by the Danish Foundation for Environmental Education, endorses a beach´s or marina´s cleanliness, safety, and high environmental and water quality standards. Originally piloted in France in 1985, the organisation now issues Blue Flag´s to the highest quality coastal locations all across the world, and last year over 4,154 beaches and marinas were awarded Blue Flag premiership status.

For 2015 Spain was awarded a total of 671 Blue Flags, and with awards for 570 idyllic and environmentally friendly beaches Spain has more Blue Flag accredited beaches than any other country on Earth.

Other countries simply struggle to match the sheer number of Spain´s fabulous beaches, with Turkey taking 420 Blue Flag beach awards, France 394, and Greece landing 396 of the coveted distinctions last summer.

With 29 Blue Flag beaches on the south Costa Blanca, local councils in Spain have been manicuring and grooming their beaches over the winter, and with the results for 2016 due in three weeks time, tourism and local government officials will be keeping their fingers crossed for an equally successful year.
