Protecting your home in Spain, getting your property ready for winter

Preparing your home for the rigours of winter requires a little planning

AFTER A BEAUTIFUL SUMMER and an unexpectedly dry autumn, we´re expecting a change in the weather from tomorrow.

The fog that rolled into coastal locations such as Torrevieja during the past few mornings heralds a less summery look to the local climate and a substantial drop in median temperatures.

Fortunately, existing weather models are not predicting a repeat of last autumns devastating weather, when a DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos) hit Spain`s eastern coastline on 13th September 2019.

The high-level isolated depression, less scientifically known as "a cold drop", resulted in unprecedented rainfall and flooding that caused significant damage in the provinces of Valencia, Castellón, Alicante, and the neighbouring Region of Murcia.

Rainfall is expected throughout the South Costa Blanca predominantly tomorrow extending into Thursday 5th November, with an 80% chance of rain on both days.

The rain is not expected to be intense, and whilst current predictions aren´t forecasting conditions similar to last September, the rainfall will be persistent and accompanied by strong winds.

The Northeasterly direction and persistent wind could lead to turbulent conditions in coastal communities, with inshore waves up to 3 metres in height.

Protecting properties and holiday homes on the Orihuela Costa

But there are some simple steps property owners on the Orihuela Costa can take to protect their investment from the effects of inclement weather here in Spain.

  • Secure your outside furniture by storing it in an underbuild or a garden shed.
  • Ensure outside planters and decorative garden ornaments won´t move in windy weather.
  • Ensure drainage points in patios and terraces are clear and free from obstruction.
  • Seal window and door joints around the external framework with silicone sealant.
  • Close windows and doors completely, checking to ensure a watertight seal.
  • If you have external security blinds covering window or doors ensure they are lowered.

One of the best ways to ensure the long-term safety of your property in Spain is to appoint an agent to look after your home while you´re away.

Our property management service provides regularly scheduled visits to your home, ensuring peace-of-mind for overseas property owners while they´re away - whatever the weather.
