The passion, the emotion, the spectacle of Easter in Spain

It´s no secret that Easter in Spain is held in significant high regard, and each year the country hosts spectacular parades in every village, town, and city across the nation.

The Mediterranean coastal city of Torrevieja is no exception, and this year the Costa Blanca´s southern capital is pulling out all the stops to provide a religious and cultural spectacle that will dazzle the crowds.

The Torrevieja Easter parades and the accompanying fiestas are a faithful tradition, with breathtaking processions that encompass and showcase the enchanting magic of Spanish culture and Catholic religious mystery.

The celebrations last all week, culminating with some truly sensational parades throughout the city this weekend.

Tomorrow at 8:00pm, the Easter procession "Procesión Viernes Santo" takes place. Starting at the Parroquia Arciprestal de la Inmaculada Concepción church in the pretty Plaza de la Constitución, the parade will march down Ramón Gallud before returning to the Plaza via Caballero de Rodas.

Easter in Torrevieja: one of the most significant traditions in Spain

On Saturday 31st March 2018, the "Tamborada: Sabado de Gloria" starts a little later at 10:30pm.

One of the larger processions, and exceptionally popular with local residents and tourists alike, the parade winds through the streets of Torrevieja and celebrates Christ´s victory over death.

The Tamborada begins in Calle del Mar and finishes with three laps of the Plaza de la Constitución.

You´ll need to be an early riser to catch Sunday´s procession, with the "Domingo de Resurreccion" starting at 8:00am.

The parade concludes the Easter fiestas, and celebrates the rising of Jesus Christ. Starting as a solemn march through the city´s streets, the procession ends on a joyful note, with live band music, a shower of flower petals, ringing of church bells, and fire-crackers.

Despite the early hour, the procession is well attended, with people coming to enjoy the infectious emotion that emerges from the passionate style in which Torrevieja celebrates the resurrection of Jesus.

But if you´re planning to visit Torrevieja over the Easter weekend be aware that the Local Police will be clearing the parade route of illegally parked vehicles 30 minutes before each procession begins.
