Feria de Sevillanas, 11-15 October 2017
Torrevieja, Port of Torrevieja
Today marks the Fiesta Nacional de España, Spain's National Day. The annual celebration takes place on the 12th October and commemorates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's first arrival in the Americas.
One of the highlights of the Spanish calendar, the day is a public holiday across Spain and businesses remain closed nationwide throughout every local province.
But if you are lucky enough to be visiting the Costa Blanca today Torrevieja have something interesting to occupy your time, as they host the Feria de Sevillanas.
Sevillanas are a type of folk music and dance originating in the region of Seville. Whilst not as internationally recognised as Flamenco, the Spanish folk dance and the accompanying traditional music is regarded as more historically significant than Flamenco, having evolved from a Castilian dance during the 15th century.
The fair is celebrated in the city every year, but this year the customary spring event occupies an autumnal date to coincide with the Spanish National Day.
This ensures that visitors to the port area in Torrevieja have extra time to enjoy the fair, with the all-inclusive family friendly event offering traditional music, dancing, and plenty of dedicated entertainment for children.
Spectacular music shows occur every evening from 8:30pm, with live entertainment from local academy dancers and professional musicians that go on into the small hours.
The entertainment is provided free of charge, and the fiesta is organised by Torrevieja town hall as part of it's public cultural events calendar. But you might want to bring money with you to sample the food and drink on offer, with 29 tents (Caseteros) serving an extensive variety of traditional Spanish fayre.
